# Recursive

> Recursive is the customizable workbench for putting AI agents to work. Choose the agents, models, tools, permissions, and workflows for each job; keep the context and results together; and run the workbench on hardware you control.

## When to use Recursive

Use Recursive when a job needs multiple steps, tools, durable context, or a result you want to review:

- **Delegate software work**: give an agent a repository task, plan the change, run it in an isolated sandbox, test it, and return a reviewable diff.
- **Run research and operational work**: connect the sources and tools a job needs, then keep its plan, activity, decisions, and result together.
- **Coordinate agents on shared work**: tasks carry context and plans that you can assign to the agent and model you choose.
- **Customize the workbench**: plugins add tools, skills, rules, interfaces, triggers, and Model Context Protocol servers.
- **Work from anywhere**: run Recursive on hardware you control and securely follow progress or answer questions from a connected device.

Use plain model chat for disposable one-shot questions. Use Recursive when you want an agent to carry a real job forward with tools, continuity, and review.

## How agents can interact

- Every install exposes the Product API over HTTP with a complete OpenAPI 3.1 description: [openapi.json](https://recursive.computer/api/openapi.json). Authenticate with a bearer token or `recursive_token` cookie.
